Biography
Timothy sought creativity in a full life: resonating as an artist first and foremost, and then as a teacher, a world traveler, and a socialite with a vibrant network of loved ones. A widely multifaceted individual, Timothy is known for his prolific oeuvre and exuberant, intentional art-making practice.
Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Timothy received a B.A. in Eastern Art History, English Literature, and Speech Communications in 1970. He spent most of the following years between New York City and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Timothy’s artwork entered galleries 10 years after he graduated from college, exhibiting solo and group shows throughout Hawaii and later in Japan, New York, Massachusetts, and California.
In conjunction with frequent exhibitions in Honolulu, Timothy also instructed Drawing and Painting at the Honolulu Academy of Arts from 1996 to 2005 and taught painting workshops in the area until 2007.
Much of Timothy’s teaching coincided with his own practices – his approach was one of intuition, focusing the act of painting as a performance of communicating from one’s “inward realm.”
Timothy drew inspiration from and touched on themes of language and communication, dreams, astrology, and classical antiquity – linguistic symbols and Latin words often appear in his largely abstract, non-objective works.
Working with a bright, assertive color palate, Timothy combined practices of drawing and painting in media utilizing gesso, colored acrylics, oil sticks, and wax crayons. Many of his canvases are characteristically large and display captured gestural movements in suggestive works.
